On various Instagram accounts and memes, you can see how the American image of middle-aged fathers are ridiculed; in a pair of New Balance sneakers, the tube socks pulled up as high as possible with a pair of loosely fitting denim shorts and a cap on his head. We can also see the style of the quintessential American dad of the era with a pair of stonewashed 501 Levis jeans, a colourful cap and a sweatshirt with a printed motif of any ball sport. This is an outfit taken from an early 1990s baseball crowd. At the same time, today we can see younger people regardless of gender and social circle, from a completely different generation, wearing almost exactly the same type of outfit - for either nostalgic, ironic or purely practical and comfortable reasons.



This comfortable style was originally worn as a casual after work outfit, when suits were the norm in the office, it was therefore very normal for you to come home and wear something more casual and comfortable. But ever since the line between formal and slightly more casual attire has been blurred in offices, both jeans and caps have become increasingly accepted, and not just something you use in your free time. Of course, it depends on which professional occupations we are talking about - the formal suit is still the attire for, for example, bankers, lawyers and brokers.

Nowadays, the style combination is thus worn not only by middle-aged men, but also by the 26-year-old millennial who casually but consciously wears the style in the office, with a slightly more nostalgic agenda. A clothing style still lives on between generations, perhaps above all for its good comfort and convenience.

That trends come and go is no news to anyone, the dad cap is just a selection of all dad styles to be inspired by and experiment with. Some classic styles, others more extravagant. For example, let us not forget the high-waisted cargo shorts and the tucked-in Hawaiian shirt, the plaid short-sleeved cotton shirt or maybe the double denim outfit with a pair of clogs or cowboy boots. We can possibly be ironic about our fathers' more or less good taste in style, but we can also allow ourselves to be inspired. The fact is that our fathers with all their different style expressions that they had over the years can be a style inspiration for future generations. Where we can pick out the best style components and at the same time let the style live on, in different interpretations and forms to find our own personal style.
